DIALOGUES & DEMOS – Rhythms Of Change: New Percussion Solos By Australian Female Composers

Claire Edwardes is a ground-breaking percussionist and a leader in developing new works for percussion. Claire has a passion for giving female composers the opportunity to develop and hear their music on the mainstage, and Rhythms Of Change is her latest project with that mission in mind.

The concept directly addresses the parity of representation of women in classical music, and specifically in the world of solo percussion music. The project was triggered by the realisation that most of the music she had been performing throughout her career was composed by men. To re-address the gender disparity, Claire commissioned seven of her favourite emerging and established female-identifying Australian composers to compose new works for solo mallet percussion.

As a commissioning and performance project, the Rhythms Of Change initiative seeks to ensure the next opus of Australian percussion music will be more fairly represented by women with the younger generation of musicians thereby doing what makes sense in our day and age – play music written equally by male and female composers.

The works are designed to be performed by a range of musicians – from high school and tertiary students through to professionals – with the compositions made readily available for purchase through the Australian Music Centre. Claire says, “For those budding percussionists out there, I urge you to consider programming some of this awesome new music in your next recital!”
