In a career spanning over forty years, Ray has established a reputation as one of the leading percussionists in this country. Specialising in West African and Afro Cuban percussion styles, Ray has played across many genres recording and performing with artists like Paul Kelly, indigenous artists Yothu Yindi and Archie Roach and Jazz musicians Vince Jones, Paul Grabowsky and Barney Mcall. Ray is currently working on projects with Malian musician Aboubacar Djeliké Kouyate, Melbourne based Jazz Ensemble Way Out West and his original project The Afro Lankan Drumming System.

Ray also runs workshops and master classes around the country in African and Cuban Percussion styles and was recently awarded an Order of Australia Medal for services to the Performing Arts.
